BRICS and the Global South must lead UN reform to ensure fair representation, multipolar governance, and a balanced global order that reflects today’s economic and political realities.
I hope BRICS does this as the points listed are very achievable with the right backing. But I fear BRICS is leaning more towards economic restructuring and hesitant towards political restructuring of the global world order
I earnestly wish they include these important political aspects in the coming months and years a that will utilize the BRICS Platform far better than just it's current economic outlook it favours
I agree with your idea of overcoming the unilateral veto by those in security council. Seems to me that reforming UN & other major institutions (IMF, etc) was firmly put on the BRICS agenda in Kazan last year. Given the plethora of challenges BRICS nations face, each nation will do what it can, when it can on this issue. Seems as though South Africa was leading the charge on this. As clear, workable proposals are introduced to the group (not "bloc") leaders will choose how they will participate. Step by step, openings will appear to create a more inclusive UN. Patience & a long view of our aspirations will create a solid path. And, by the way, I'm not at all convinced that the AU exists for the good of Africans. Just as ECOWAS is losing its credibility, it might be time for deeper scrutiny of AU but that's up to African people to decide.
The obvious way to reform the UN is for BRICS+ to terminate their UN appearances in New York and establish a new UN Headquarters somewhere OUT of both Europe and North America. Then set up a new General Assembly and a new Security Council consisting of representatives of the nations with the larger populations as well as representatives from nominated Western nations but WITHOUT the right of veto. Israel and any other nation displaying or supporting genocidal activities must be denied membership until such matters of international justice can be settled. For too long USA (and its' chief supporter Israel) have dominated the UN partly because of the location of the UN headquarters in New York. This must change.
I would just cap the number of vetoes to (say) 10 vetoes over a 5 year rolling period. And UK and France should have their vetoes reduced to 2 vetoes over a 5 year rolling period. The cap should be progressively reduced.
