Celebrating Mauritius’s Victory In Reclaiming Chagos Islands Sovereignty From The UK
Mauritius reclaims Chagos from UK, ending colonial grip. A win for the Global South, while Britain grapples with shifting sovereignty and looming challenges.
Currently a vassal state of America and a former colonial superpower – the has-been Great Britain, ceded sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius on Oct 3, 2024. This is a big win for the Independent African Nation and a major inconvenience for the small island country of Western Europe. One of our previous articles discusses the long and painful history of Chagos at the hands of the usual suspects.
One might assume that Sir Kier Starmer and his Parliamentary Cabinet were haunted by visions of Gandhi barely within three months since India came out openly in support of Mauritius. Even after 75+ years, the rulers of Britain are still mouthing Winston Churchill’s famous words after orchestrating the Bengal Famine — “Why hasn’t Gandhi died yet?”. Some experts also opine that Gandhi might resurface next in the Argentinian Falkland Islands, to be henceforth referred to as Islas Malvinas. This can also be inferred from reports by British taxpayer-funded disinformation specialist media corporations.
Factual Trivia (not to be misunderstood as satire): As per the Oxford Dictionary, the word Juggernaut means “a large and powerful force or institution that cannot be controlled” by the British. This English word originates from the Hindu Deity Jagannatha of Puri from the state of Odisha in the Eastern part of India. Incidentally, the Current Prime Minister of Mauritius Honorable Pravind Jugnauth shares his name with the revered deity.
PM Jugnauth’s Juggernaut Pays Off, UK To Make Lease Payments For Diego Garcia In A DeDollarized World
Serving as the Prime Minister of Mauritius since January 2017, PM Jugnauth has slowly, steadily, and successfully clinched his national territory from the UK. Jugnauth’s effort establishes the fact that the entire Global South takes pleasure in watching the ‘Sunset on the British colonial empire’ (pun intended). Meanwhile, citizens of BRICS+ nations are preparing front-row seats to enjoy the fireworks when the sun sets on the American hegemonic empire after the Kazan Summit.
There might be criticisms over the agreement as to why the US/UK naval base in Diego Garcia is allowed to continue operating for a 99-year lease period. However, before criticizing the Mauritius government for accepting these terms, one must realize that the lease payments will be made in a de-dollarized economy. And the world knows very well what will happen to Western currencies during and after DeDollarization. It can be surmised that the Indian government played a crucial role by sharing what they learned from East India Company’s colonization techniques and suggesting that Mauritius drop a ‘Uno Reverse’ card.
A statement from the Grandmaster POTUS Biden and the 99-year lease clause of the Chagos agreement hints that the western Naval base on the Island of Diego Garcia will continue meddling in the British Indian Ocean Territory (can also be abbreviated as BIGOT) and the Indian Ocean Region as a whole. America’s animosity against China and a passive hatred for India’s economic growth seems to have hurt its own ally — the UK, in this particular case. This event re-iterates the 20th-century American foreign policy doctrine codified by the Late Henry Kissinger: “To be an enemy of America can be dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal”.
Will The Dishonorable UK Honor the Chagos Sovreignity Agreement?
Every sensible voice across the globe, including the British voters, may cast doubts on the UK government’s trustworthiness in honoring any agreement. And yes, there are two main loopholes within the Chagos agreement whereby they may find ways to opt out.
While all the Western official press statements mention the 99-year Diego Garcia lease, none of them mention the amount or quantum of the lease payments. It is also unclear if the lease contains a bankruptcy clause. What can Mauritius do if the UK government declares itself bankrupt and claims that it has no more wealth remaining from its colonial loot?
The Chagos Islands Sovereignty agreement is signed between the Republic of Mauritius and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However, it is unclear if the agreement continues to be valid if Northern Ireland opts for its freedom and joins the Republic of Ireland. Alternatively, Britain may also choose to avoid the lease payments by partitioning itself proactively and returning the Irish territory of Northern Ireland, acknowledging an Independent Scotland and the creation of an Islamic Republic of London at the seat of power.
Conclusion
Mauritius’ decade-long fight for reclaiming the Chagos archipelago and the outcome of its humungous efforts has ignited hope among the Argentines, Irish and Scottish. Western mainstream media outlets are hoping to make the most of this opportunity to churn clickbait articles with half-truths and whole-lies. Meanwhile, the rest of the civilized world can only hope that Mexico, Texas, and Quebec would also learn from Mauritius and appreciate the value of a sovereign territory.
I assure you that Mexico deeply appreciates its sovereignty. The recent inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, elected by clear majority of Mexicans to carry on "the Fourth Transformation" testifies to this.
Where is the sovereignty there? It is more like a political arrangement for marketing purposes only.
